Jean's Story

Wow, since high school? Let's see. I graduated from UNC in Greeley in 1978 with a BA in English and Journalism. I got married that same year to a "Jersey guy," (sorry Bruce) Tom Gilmore. We stayed in Colorado until 1980 and then moved to Dodge City, KS. Few jobs in CO at the time and my parents and little brother lived there. Our twin girls, Christena and Mary were born there in July of 1981, and we ended up living there until 1984, at which time we moved back east to New York. While Tom enjoyed this right away, it took me nearly five full years to get used to it! People out here are very strange and unfriendly, at first. In this state, you're judged for mostly what you have, not who you are. We had our third girl, Katy, in April of 1986. By this time we had purchased our dream home on three acres out in the country next to an apple orchard. As much as I love this house, however, it is now far too much for me to clean on a regular basis! I hold a permanent teaching certificate with the state of NY and am also certified to be employed for anything up to and including Superintendent of schools. I currently teach 12th grade British Literature and am an adjunct professor of Freshman English I and II as a participant in a local college's "Community College in the High School" program. I have spent quite a bit of time in going back to school to earn two masters degrees; one in 2005 from Indiana Wesleyan for Curriculum, Instruction and Assessment and one in 2006 from Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts in Educational Administration. I have worked for the same school district for the past 14 years and have one more year to qualify for permanent health insurance coverage and then I am so out of here! I am tired of NY and I want to come home to Colorado! My parents live in Windsor, are in their 80's and I'd like to spend what time they have left with them. My sister Carol, and her husband, Dale, spent years living in Loveland, but recently moved to Stuttgart, Germany, where Carol took a promotion from her job in human resources for Woodward Governor. They have no children. My older brother, Mark, moved to Australia a number of years ago and loves it "down under." My youngest brother,Paul, is currently living in Ann Arbor, Michigan, where he is still a Bronco among Lions, lol. He is a vice president in operations for Conway Freight Systems. Mark has three children with various women; we are in contact with the first two but know his third child, Brittny, far better. Paul and his wife, Sharon, have two: Cullen who is 22 and Kiersten who is 19, I think. My own girls have supplied me with four grandchildren. Christena has two girls; Arianna, 7 and Amani, 1 1/2. Mary has a boy and a girl, Dionna, 7 and Sean, 2 1/2. I adore all four of them and could not imagine life without them! Having only tried skiing once while I lived in its mecca, I became an avid skier here on the East coast, go figure-right? I signed up to chaperone with a school ski club 15 years ago and took beginner's lessons with the kids. From there I worked hard to a...Expand for more
dvance to a pretty good skier-able to handle blues and blacks out here. Tom won two different trips to Aspen back in the mid- 90's, and one of the perks from the company was private ski instruction each trip. It was wonderful, and although I never felt confident enough to tackle any black runs at Aspen or Snowmass, I did keep my status as a fairly good intermediate skier. Unfortunately, a car accident, (NOT my fault) in 1997 with six subsequent spine surgeries have left me unwilling to even try it anymore. Too much titanium in my spine, combined with the somewhat fragile bones of a middle-aged lady plus a firm desire to be able to walk with my own legs until the day I die! lol For the first five years I lived out here, I was convinced that nothing would top being near the Rockies. That was until we started vacationing each year in a beach house in Ocean Isle, NC. From that began a love affair with the ocean that I have still not quit! There's nothing like a sunset on the beach, chair in the sand, surf coming in and out over my feet; the smell of the salt air in the slight breeze as it rises around the burnt orange of the setting sun. Around March (and believe me, these New England winters are HELL on earth!) I start to literally crave that experience and cannot wait to go! About six years ago, I began coming back to CO once a year on spring break from school. For the last two, however, the break was too short so I go back now for three weeks at a time. I stayed with Mom and Dad, and spent time with Carol and Paul, which was wonderful. Carol promises that she'll take her once a year trip back to the states while I'm home so that we can see each other. I have never been able to make a single one of the '72 reunions. The ten year, I had newborn twins, the 20th I had just started a new job and was recovering from the auto accident. I am really hoping that there will be a 30th, as that one I will be able to make because I plan to be living in CO by that July! I do have a facebook page, my profile pic is the one I posted here, so if you just search under Jean Gilmore, friend me and I'd be happy to answer! From there I can supply you with my email address. I have corresponded with a few of you over the years. The almost number one regret of my life is losing touch with Glenn Nichols around 2000. He and I wrote and called each other regularly from 1982 till then, discussing spouses, babies, jobs, world events and then graduating to teenagers, jobs and approaching forties. We gradually lost touch as each of our lives became busier and busier. I saw on the school website that Glenn had passed away in 2004 and it literally broke my heart! I will always love you and miss you, Glenn! So, on that note, should ANY of you wish to get in touch with me, I WILL write back, I promise! It may take me a few days (I'm always inundated with papers to grade as well as events to attend), but I will always answer! To those of us who are gone- I miss you, to those of you who are left-I remember you- and to the Class of 1972-you're the BEST!!!

Okay. I apologize for the poor quality of the photo. Gator came out of the lake behind my house-couldn't get phone fast enough and then couldn't zoom in enough! Looked to be about 8 feet, which is-I guess-small for here. Bu
